Baseball Grabs Two Major Honors
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Shenandoah University earned a pair of major baseball honors from the USA South in All-Conference selections announced Wednesday morning by the league.
Senior Scott Van Dusseldorp and junior Greg Van Sickler headline a group of eight men earning All-USA South honors by being named as the league's Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.
Van Dusseldorp is currently hitting .417 with 55 hits and 53 RBI in 132 at-bats. A solid power hitter for his entire career, Van Dusseldorp is also one home run from holding the all-time mark at Shenandoah.
He currently leads the team with 11 dingers.
In addition to his Player of the Year accolade, Van Dusseldorp is a first team selection at third base.
Van Sickler, the 2010 pre-season Baseball America Division III Player of the Year, was named as a first team player at two positions: pitcher and utility, in addition to earning Pitcher of the Year honors.
As a pitcher, Van Sickler is 6-1 overall with a 2.37 ERA over 60.2 innings in eight appearances. Van Sickler has thrown four complete games this season and has one shutout.
As a hitter, he has a .384 average with 19 doubles among his 53 hits.
He has been named as the league's Pitcher of the Week three times this season and this is his second major honor from the league in his career. In 2008, Van Sickler was the league's Rookie of the Year.
This is the first time in school history that SU has had either the league's Player of the Year or Pitcher of the Year.
In addition to Van Dusseldorp and Van Sickler earning those three first team accolades, junior Kevin Brashears gives the team a third player with first team honors as he was picked in the outfield.
The current USA South Conference Player of the Week, Brashears leads the Hornets with a .439 average from his leadoff spot and boasts 69 hits, 10 HR and 45 RBI in 157 at-bats.
Shenandoah also had two players: seniors Jon Holcomb and Adam Delauter, on the second team.
Holcomb, at second base, is hitting .370 overall and Delauter .389 as the team's primary rightfielder. In conference contests, Delauter is hitting a second-best-on-team .406 while Holcomb had a walkoff single to help beat Christopher Newport three weeks ago.
The final on-field honoree comes on the honorable mention team, where sophomore Kyle Scallion was picked as a relief pitcher.
In 17 appearances this season, Scallion has five saves and 20 strikeouts.
Senior Jesse Henry rounds out the honorees by being selected to the league's All-Sportsmanship team.
