Baseball Gets Rings

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University baseball team wraps up its 2009 non-traditional season Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader against Potomac (W. Va.) State, and the Hornets capped an outstanding 2009 this past Saturday night by receiving their South Region Championship rings.

At halftime of the Hornets football game against Ferrum College and before a capacity homecoming night crowd, 46 of the 48 players from the 2009 team received their championship rings from SU President Dr. Tracy Fitzsimmons.

In all, 56 rings were presented by Fitzsimmons to players, coaches and athletic communications personnel.

The baseball team won a school-record 38 games last spring and swept four games in the South (Salisbury) Regional, defeating Johns Hopkins 11-7 for the right to advance to the Division III Championships in Appleton, Wis.

The Hornets went 1-2 in Appleton, defeating Farmingdale (N.Y.) State before losing to eventual national champion St. Thomas (Minn.) and Carthage (Wis.) on their way to a No. 6 finish in the final national poll.
