Wingfield Added to Baseball Staff

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University Head Baseball Coach Kevin Anderson announced Thursday that he has hired Patrick Wingfield as an assistant baseball coach.

Wingfield, a native of Winchester and a 2008 University of Virginia graduate, will assist with the Hornets nationally ranked varsity program and serve as associate head coach of the junior varsity program.

David Jenkins, a 2007 SU graduate, will take over the junior varsity program this spring and continue his role with the varsity program.

"We are extremely pleased to add Patrick to the staff," Anderson said. "We were seeking an additional qualified coach to add to our staff due to the high numbers of student-athletes in both of our programs. Patrick is a perfect fit for us. He is a local player who has played at the highest collegiate level and is well-suited to helping us continue to develop our players both academically and athletically."

While at UVa., Wingfield was a four-year letterman for the Wahoos. A three-year starter at third base, Wingfield helped his club to four appearances in the NCAA Tournament and a No. 2 national ranking in 2007.

In addition, he was a three-year member of the Winchester Royals of the Valley summer collegiate Baseball League and also played one summer for Yarmouth-Dennis in the Cape Cod League.

As a prep star at John Handley High School here in Winchester, Wingfield was a three-sport athlete for the Judges earning All-District honors in both football and baseball. A National Honor Society member and the captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams as a senior, Wingfield graduated with a 3.9 GPA.

In his first season as a coach, Wingfield will assist with the junior varsity program and the varsity infielders and hitters. "Like most collegiate baseball players, I had hoped to continue my career after college. Unfortunately, I had a couple of injuries which has prevented me from pursuing that goal.

"I hadn't thought about coaching, but when coach Anderson contacted me after graduation, I realized that this would be a great way to stay involved in the game.

"I have known coach Anderson since high school and played for him in Winchester. To have the opportunity to coach with him in my hometown is a great situation for me."

In addition to this part-time position, Wingfield will also conduct clinics at the Shenandoah Valley Baseball/Softball Academy located at the Sports Complex in Winchester.
