Baseball Earns Five All-State Honors


NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Five Shenandoah University baseball players were honored Tuesday with All-State selections in picked announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association.

Freshman Cory Nelson was picked as the VaSID Rookie of the Year and Head Coach Kevin Anderson earned Coach of the Year honors while Scott LambertKevin Brashears and Greg Van Sickler all earned first-team honors.

Junior Jesse Henry, at shortstop, rounded out the honorees by being named second-team All-State.

Nelson, a freshman from Portsmouth, Va., hit .346 with 54 hits, 47 runs, eight home runs and 44 RBI. He was an ABCA All-Region choice and was also named All-USA South Conference. Nelson was selected to the Salisbury Regional All-Tournament team and was named USA South Rookie Player or Pitcher of the Week three times. In addition to his production at the plate, Nelson was 1-0 on the mound with seven strikeouts in 11 innings pitched.

Anderson led the Hornets to a 38-10 record, setting a new school record for wins in a season as his squad finished the year ranked sixth in the nation by the ABCA. He was named the 2009 ABCA South Region Coach of the Year as he guided SU to its first ever NCAA World Series appearance.
