Baseball Sweeps Eagles

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 20 Shenandoah University earned its 18th straight non-conference baseball victory by sweeping a doubleheader from St. Joseph's (L.I.) Wednesday evening.

SU (26-5) was a 15-3 winner in game one before winning 12-3 in the nightcap over the Golden Eagles (9-10).

Sophomore Greg Van Sickler led the Hornets to the game one victory with a two-run HR in the third and a solo shot in the fifth.

Van Sickler's two home runs, his fourth and fifth of the season, were two of 13 hits that Shenandoah had in the contest.

The Hornets scored four runs in the first, one in the second and six more in the third to make things considerably easier for freshman starter Eric Rabung (7-0).

Rabung allowed one run on five hits and four walks in 6.0 innings of action. Rabung also struck out four before turning it over to Nick Gregg for the seventh.

In addition to Van Sickler's two hits, classmate Kevin Brashears was 3 for 5 and senior Scott Lambert 3 for 3 with three RBI.

Junior Jake Yocum (4-0) gave up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning of game two, but his offense backed him up by scoring two runs in each of the first three frames and then six runs in the fourth to turn the nightcap into a rout.

Lambert had a home run and a double to drive in three, Jesse Henry was 3 for 4 and Cory Nelson 2 for 3 with two runs batted in.

Brashears had unusual play when he drove in a pair of runs on a second inning sacrifice fly to right. Nelson, who was on third after reaching on an error and moving up when Josh Simons doubled to right center, scored easily on the play.

Simons tagged and never stopped running as he reached third and was able to beat the relay throw in from right.

Yocum struck out six and walked five in 5.0 innings and freshman Bryce Sears gave up one run on two hits to finish the contest for coach Kevin Anderson.
