Baseball Defrocks Bishops

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University secured itself a tie for third place in the USA South Conference baseball race with a 5-2 victory over N.C. Wesleyan Sunday afternoon in the conference finale for both teams.

Senior Josh Simons (3-0) tossed a complete game six-hitter for the Hornets (28-6, 5-5 USA South), who will be the fourth seed at next week's conference tournament.

Despite the loss, N.C. Wesleyan (20-15, 8-4) wins the league's regular season title.

Thanks to a 12-2 Christopher Newport victory over Methodist on Saturday, NCWC will be the tournament's top seed and Methodist the No. 2.

The tournament begins on Thursday morning at 9:30 when SU takes on fifth-seeded Greensboro College in the first of four day-one contests.

Simons salvaged a split for the Hornets Saturday as he shut the Bishops down for the first eight innings. NC Wesleyan was able to score a pair of unearned runs in the ninth, but the second run came on the final play of the contest as designated hitter Justin Tuck was thrown out at second trying to stretch an RBI single into a double.

Simons struck out five and walked just one in tossing the first complete game of his career.

Shenandoah gave Simons the offensive support he would need with two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh off of Bishops starter Jonathan Lucas (1-4).

Three of those runs were unearned, including both in the sixth.

Scott Lambert, Jesse Henry and Jasen Eberz all had two hits each for SU.
