INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Shenandoah University baseball team has earned an at-large bid to the 2009 NCAA Baseball Championships in selections announced Monday morning by the NCAA.

The Hornets (33-8 overall, 28-6 in the South Region) earned one of the Pool C (at-large) berths into the 54-team and will begin tournament play on Wednesday in the eight-team South Regional hosted by Salisbury University.

Shenandoah is the second seed in that regional to the host Sea Gulls and the regional also features fellow USA South members N.C. Wesleyan and Christopher Newport. SU will play seventh-seeded Johns Hopkins in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m.

In Thursday's second round, the Hornets will face either third-seeded N.C. Wesleyan or No. 6 York (Pa.). Game time is 7:45 p.m. if Shenandoah wins against JHU or 1:45 should the Blue Jays win. 

Coach Kevin Anderson's club has a 4-4 record this season against the teams in the tourney - the Hornets are 2-3 against No. 4 N.C. Wesleyan, 1-1 against No. 5 Christopher Newport and 1-0 against No. 8 Washington & Lee.

This is the first-ever NCAA Tournament berth for the baseball team and the seventh overall for the school. The last Shenandoah team to play in the NCAA Tournament was the football team in 2004.
