Baseball Remains Third in South
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - For the third straight week, the Shenandoah University baseball team remains third in the South Region rankings in a release announced Thursday by the NCAA.
Shenandoah, which was idle this past week, is third of five teams in the South Region ranking.
Salisbury (Md.) , a Pool B team, and Millsaps (Miss.), a Pool C team, remain Nos. 1 and 2 in the final NCAA regional rankings of the year. The Sea Gulls and Majors have been ranked ahead of SU in all three published polls this spring.
Fellow USA South members N.C. Wesleyan and Christopher Newport round out the rankings at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Those two teams swapped positions this week after CNU lost and tied two games against Stevenson on Saturday.
The rankings are used to help determine the 54-team NCAA Tournament field. After 34 automatic bids (Pool A) and six Pool B bids (independents and leagues without an automatic qualifer) are awarded, the remaining 14 spots (Pool C) will be filled from schools not qualifying in Pools A and B.
The rankings help order the schools for the Pool B and Pool C bids.
The playoff field will be selected Sunday night.
