FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Shenandoah University had five student-athletes earn USA South Conference weekly honors in selections announced Monday by the conference office.
Seniors Katie Haskins, Colleen Hightower and Josh Simons were all honored as Players of the Week while freshmen Cory Nelson and Eric Rabung earned rookie honors in baseball.
Haskins earns her third Pitcher of the Week award in softball after tossing complete games victories over Averett, Ferrum and Greensboro.
In 21.0 innings pitched, Haskins allowed just three runs on 11 hits and seven walks while striking out 28. She had a one-hitter against Averett and a three-hitter versus Greensboro; the GC win was also her 12th straight.
Hightower was honored as the women's tennis Player of the Week for leading SU to wins over Christopher Newport and Averett with two singles and two doubles victories.
The Hornets win over CNU was the first-ever for the squad and Hightower had the match-clinching triumph over Averett.
The final three awards all came from baseball.
Simons earns his first-ever Pitcher of the Week award after tossing a complete-game six-hitter against N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday. Simons struck out five and allowed just a pair of unearned runs in the top of the ninth.
Rabung gives SU a sweep of the pitching awards with his selection as the Rookie. He improved to 7-0 this spring on Wednesday as he allowed one run on five hits in a 15-3 win over St. Joseph's (L.I.).
Nelson grabs his third Rookie honor (two player, one pitcher) after hitting .429 last week in 14 at-bats in four games. He was a combined 3 for 7 in the sweep over St. Joseph's and also 3 for 7 in two games against N.C. Wesleyan.
All five student-athletes are off this week until taking part in the USA South Conference Spring Sports Festival beginning on Thursday.
