Women Lead President's Cup Finish
WINCHESTER, Va. – A third-place finish from the Shenandoah University women headline the Hornets performance in the 2010 USA South Conference President’s Cup standings released recently by the league.
With a second-place performance from cross country and a third-place from lacrosse, the SU women finished an all-time best third of 10 schools in the 2009-10 standings.
Each year, the USA South awards three President’s Cups: a men’s, a women’s and an overall, for athletic excellence. Points are awarded on a 10-1 basis with the champion receiving one point for every school that sponsors that particular sport.
Women’s Cross Country, which finished second of nine teams, was the top point-earner this season with eight points.
Soccer added seven points, basketball and lacrosse six each, softball 5.5, tennis five and volleyball two to give the Hornet women a 39.5 total. SU finished 1.5 points ahead of fourth-place Greensboro and seven points behind second-place Methodist.
Christopher Newport, which won the overall cup for the fourth consecutive year, won the women’s cup with 64.0 points. They won the overall title by 27 points over MU with a 102.0 total.
CNU shared the men’s title with N.C. Wesleyan with 38.0 points.
Shenandoah finished fifth in the overall, with 60.5 points, and sixth in the men’s with 21.0.
The baseball and basketball teams shared top honors on the men’s side by each finishing tied for second in the regular season. Both teams earned 5.5 points.
All President’s Cup points, with the exception of men’s and women’s cross country and men’s golf, are determined by regular season standings. Tournament results are not factored into the total.
Fifteen of the Hornets 20 sports compete in the USA South. The field hockey, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track & field teams are members of the MAC and the men's lacrosse team competes in the CSAC.
