FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The women's softball team leads five SU teams in pre-season picks of the USA South Conference coaches in polls released Wednesday by the league.
The softball squad, which has won 30 games in each of the last two years, is the pre-season No. 3 selection of 10 teams in the USA South.
Under sixth-year head coach Marlena Kotynski, SU finished second in the softball regular season last year before advancing to the USA South Tournament Championship game for the second time in three years.
Kotynski's team has 58 points in the poll to finish just behind Peace College.
CNU is once again selected to win it all in 2010. The Captains won both the regular season and tournament last spring.
The Hornets women's lacrosse team is the preseason No. 4 pick in its poll.
SU, under the direction of second-year coach Lindsey West, finished fourth last season and advanced to the USA South Conference Tournament semi-finals for the first time in three years.
West's club has 30 points in the poll to come in just between third-place Methodist and fifth-place Ferrum.
The 2010 pre-season poll is in the exact order of the finish of the 2009 regular season. The three new programs this year - N.C. Wesleyan, Agnes Scott and LaGrange - round out the poll in places six through eight, respectively.
The golfers are the pre-season No. 6 selection in that poll. The Hornets, who finished fifth last season in the USA South Tournament, have 12 points to come in behind pre-season No. 5 pick N.C. Wesleyan.
Methodist, the seven-time defending champions, are the pre-season selection to win it again this spring.
Shenandoah is the pre-season No. 7 pick in men's tennis and No. 4 on the women's side.
Last season, the Hornet women finished an all-time best third place in the league.
The baseball poll was announced last week and SU was the pick to win it in that sport.
