Five Named Player of Week
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Shenandoah University had five student-athletes earn USA South Conference Player of the Week honors in selections announced Monday by the conference office.
Three of these selections came in men's and women's cross country with the remaining two coming from the women's soccer program.
In cross country, the men swept the awards with Josiah Renton named as the league's Runner of the Week and Tim Robinson as the Rookie of the Week. The two men helped Shenandoah to a runner-up performance this past week at the Hood College Invitational.
Renton finished fifth of 123 runners with a 28:26 while Robinson finished 10 seconds later in 12th place.
On the women's side, freshman Roni Frye won the 6000 meter race with a 24:40 and was named as the league's Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season. Frye has earned Rookie honors in each week that the award has been given and the Hornets competed.
The final two honorees, Lauren Morris and Amber Womack, come from women's soccer. Coach Elizabeth Pike's squad defeated Wesley, 2-1, Ferrum, 2-0, and Averett, 4-0, last week with Womack contributing two goals and three assists to earn league Rookie of the Week accolades for the second time this season.
Womack had a goal in the Ferrum contest and a goal and two assists against Averett.
Morris, a center back, was named as the Defensive Player of the Week. In the three games, the SU defense allowed just the one goal and held the three team's scoreless over the final 259:37 of game time. Additionally, Ferrum and Averett were able to muster just three shots on goal over the weekend.
