WINCHESTER, Va. - We continue our look at the top 10 moments from 2013-14 with our look at the No. 8 highlight - the creation of the Buzzy Awards.
Each year, as a team's season ends, that squad takes time to celebrate their accomplishments and look forward to the future.
These events, usually in the form of banquets, have proven extremely popular with student-athletes.
The department also sponsors an event - the Senior Dinner - for its graduating class.
However, there was no capstone event for the department as a whole. No way for the better than 450 student-athletes to be honored in front of all of their peers.
Until this year.
Working with his retention committee, Director of Athletics Doug Zipp instituted the first-ever "Buzzy" Awards this spring.
The committee came up with 11 awards to be voted on by both the student-athletes and department staff including Play of the Year, Team of the Year, Breakthrough Team and Best Upset.
The final award, the Courage Award, was awarded posthumously to Patrick "Packy" Purcell '12. Purcell, a four-year member of the football program during his time at SU, lost his battle with cancer in the spring of 2013.
In addition to the awards presentation, student-athletes had a chance to take candid photos during the 'social hour' portion of the event.
