Shenandoah University President Tracy Fitzsimmons announced Tuesday that she is appointing Brian Wigley as Interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Dr. Wigley, who is the Faculty Athletics Representative at SU, will serve as Interim AD beginning June 1.
Wayne Edwards, the current AD, announced his retirement in February. Dr. Edwards’ final day at Shenandoah is May 31.
Edwards leaves Shenandoah after 2.5 years of service. During his tenure, the baseball, women’s cross country, women's soccer and softball teams won USA South Conference titles.
In September 2010, Edwards secured the university’s acceptance into the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The 20-sport intercollegiate athletic program officially joins the ODAC on July 1. The university is currently in the midst of a national search for its new AD.
“Brian is the perfect person to lead the department during this transition period,” Dr. Fitzsimmons said.
“In his role as FAR, he has been involved with the department on a day-to-day basis for the past two years. The timing also works well with his teaching responsibilities.
“We have made excellent progress in our search for a permanent AD. The committee has identified its top candidates and has started the interview process. Until that new person is selected, I have every confidence in Brian to oversee intercollegiate athletics.”
Wigley, the chair of the Kinesiology Department, has been a member of the SU faculty since 2002. He took over the FAR position in July 2010.
“I would like to thank Dr. Fitzsimmons for this opportunity,” Wigley said. “I have learned a great deal about the department in the past two years and I feel this knowledge is going to be invaluable to me as interim AD.”
